fuel prices in Tonga rose by 19% for petrol, 30% for diesel.

https://archive.ph/Sg31J

Yesterday, 1 April 2026, fuel prices in Tonga rose by over 19% for petrol (to $3.75 pa'anga/L), over 52% for kerosene and over 30% for diesel ($4.50/L).

At the government's third media briefing on the country's fuel supply, Mr. Lano Fonua from the Energy sector, highlighted Tonga’s vulnerability to external supply shocks as the country relies heavily on imported fuel.
Fonua said, "It is important to note that Tonga’s fuel supply chain depends on two refineries in Singapore and South Korea. Around 75% of their crude oil comes from regions affected by the current conflict, meaning we are significantly impacted,” he said.
“Our supply chain from the refineries through Fiji—is closely monitored as part of our framework. At present, the supply remains stable,” Fonua noted.
The government is urging the public to avoid panic buying.
PM Fakafanua warned that fuel prices are likely to continue rising as long as the conflict persists.
“Fuel prices will keep increasing until the conflict ends. The situation depends heavily on developments in the war. Our main concern is ensuring continued supply, which is why we are preparing accordingly. People can help by conserving fuel, limiting long-distance travel, and choosing alternative modes of transport such as walking or cycling," he said.

Photo: Australia in Tonga.
The arrival of a second international undersea telecommunications cable for Tonga was celebrated with a handover ceremony in Vava'u. The Tonga Hawaiki Submarine Cable Branch System, which officially landed in Vava'u on 18 March, is expected to bring enhanced regional and global connectivity.

The 383-kilometre cable is a significant step for Tonga's connectivity resilience. It is expected to reduce the risk of further international telecommunications outages, support secure and reliable service, contribute to Tonga's priorities for national digitalisation and economic growth.

This project is jointly funded by Australia, through the Australian Infrastructure Financing Facility for the Pacific (AIFFP) providing AUD 35.6 million, and the Government of New Zealand, contributing AUD 19 million.

The project is being delivered in partnership with the Government of Tonga and Tonga Cable Limited.

The Australian High Commission in Tonga has stated that work will continue to ensure that cable is ready for service within the next few months.

Tonga takes ownership of kava standard

Tonga takes ownership of kava standard as PHAMA Plus ends 15-year program

Friday, March 27, 2026

Tonga has taken full ownership of key agricultural export standards as the PHAMA Plus program concluded its 15-year engagement in the kingdom, handing over the Tonga Kava Standard and Watermelon Technical Guidelines to government authorities on 26 March 2026.

The transfer, marked at the “Harvesting Success: PHAMA Plus Tonga Knowledge Forum” held at the Tanoa International Dateline Hotel, signals a shift toward locally led regulation of major export commodities critical to Tonga’s economy.

Acting Australian High Commissioner to Tonga, Alison Gow, formally handed over the Deed of Assignment for the Tonga Kava Quality Standard to Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Trade and Economic Development, Viliami Latu. The standard, first published in 2020, has now been incorporated into the Tonga Kava Bill, establishing national benchmarks for quality, safety, and consistency in kava processing and export.

“We are humbled to stand alongside the government of Tonga for the handover of the intellectual property, for the Tonga Kava standard. This marks another chapter in a long entrusted partnership, a milestone that strengthens Tonga's capacity, shape legislation that protects opportunities for kava farmers and exporters while safeguarding the integrity of a product that has woven so deeply into Tongan identity, culture, and tradition," Gow said.

Watermelon Technical Guidelines were also handed over by Esther Jens of the New Zealand High Commission. The guidelines provide research-based direction across the full production cycle—from planting and harvesting to storage and export packaging—targeting farmers, exporters, and government officials.

Since 2011, PHAMA Plus has supported Tonga’s agricultural and trade systems through technical assistance to ministries and exporters, contributing to improved food safety systems, expanded processing capacity, and modernized export operations.

Reflecting on the program’s impact, Gow said its work extended from pack houses to government offices and international shipping routes.

“Across Tonga, PHAMA Plus has shaped national efforts to strengthen food's safety systems, expand processing capacity, modernized fumigation services, and improve pack house operations in key export sectors. These are technical achievements, yes, but behind each of those are decisions made to lift standards and embrace change for the future of Tonga,” she said.

Latu emphasized the broader significance of trade for Tonga, describing it as essential to livelihoods and economic resilience in small island economies.

“With small island economies like Tonga, trade is not only about economic growth, it is about creating opportunities for farmers and exporters, strengthening rural livelihoods, and ensuring that our products can compete on the international market,” he said.

He added that strengthening access to overseas markets remains critical for job creation and income growth, particularly in agriculture and fisheries, sectors heavily relied upon by Tonga.

The forum brought together government officials, development partners, exporters, service providers, and farmers to reflect on progress and share knowledge, as PHAMA Plus formally closes its chapter in Tonga after 15 years of engagement.

Energy Commission approves Govt Lifeline Contribution to Tonga Power tariff
Thursday, October 2, 2025 - 17:16. Updated on Thursday, October 2, 2025 - 19:02.

ENERGY COMMISSION
PUBLIC NOTICE
Government Lifeline Contribution to tariff at Tonga Power Ltd.
Effective from 1st October 2025
A significant increase in the regulated price of diesel has been approved by the Competent Authority effective 1 October 2025. This has contributed to a net increase of $0.14 seniti per litre (7.10%) as from June 2025 to September 2025.
As a result, this has increased the cost of fuel required for power generation by 7.22 seniti per kWh (8.5%) with the result that the total electricity tariff will increase from the current 84.94 seniti per kWh to 92.16 seniti per kWh.
The Government continued to subsidize the ‘Lifeline Tariff Discount Scheme’.
The discounted tariff of 7.22 seniti/kWh is to apply to the regulated tariff of $0.9216 seniti/kWh, only to the power customers consuming more 150 kWh/month, to maintain the electricity tariff at 84.94 seniti/kWh.
The discounted tariff of 22.16 seniti/kWh is to apply to the regulated tariff of $0.9216 seniti/kWh, only to the power customers consuming less 150 kWh/month, to maintain the electricity tariff at 70.00 seniti/kWh.
The Energy Commission has approved the ‘Government Lifeline Tariff Discount Scheme’ effective for the power consumption from 1st October 2025.
The revised tariff rates approved by the Energy Commission are as follows: -

NOTE: The Energy Tariff is regulated by the Energy Act 2021 and administered by the Energy Commission. A process set down in the Concession Agreement between Tonga Power Limited and the Energy (Electricity) Commission determines the tariff adjustment. The Competent Authority is the Tongan Government Agency whom sets the landed price of diesel which Tonga Power Limited uses for their power generation.
Respectfully, Energy Commission

A вообще старлинк.

2022 Hunga-Tonga mega-tsunami simulation

https://matangitonga.to/2023/07/13/tong … estruction

Tonga’s domestic submarine cable repaired after HTHH destruction
Thursday, July 13, 2023 - 17:09

Nuku'alofa, Tonga

Repairs on the domestic submarine cable system connecting Tongatapu to Ha’apai and Vava’u were completed and back in service on Wednesday night, 12 July, after it was destroyed by the Hunga-Tonga Hunga-Ha’apai volcanic eruption in January 2022.

Tonga Cable Ltd today stated that the cable system had been down for almost 18-months, since it was destroyed by the eruption. The amount of cable used in the reconnecting of the cable system was just over 108km.

"The reason it has taken so long to get the domestic cable repaired is due to the lack of the required amount and type of cable to carry out the repair job. It took 5 months to confirm the amount of cable to order from ASN.

“This needed to await the survey results which were being conducted by the New Zealand organization known as the National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research (NIWA) in April/May 2022."

Once the order was placed it took ASN took about seven-months to manufacture our cable order and it took around four-months for the order to be shipped from ASN in France and another two-months for the cable ship to get to Tonga.

Meanwhile, the cable repair ship, C/S Lodbrog owned and operated jointly by Alcatel Submarine Networks (ASN) and Optic Marine (OMS) arrived into Tonga waters, on 5 July.

Two representatives, Siumafua Moala, engineer from TCL, and Siteni ‘Ahio, senior engineer from MEIDECC, joined the ship carrying a crew of 57 during its eight-day repair task.

TCL acknowledged the support of the Government of Tonga and the financial assistance provided by the Australian High Commission towards the repair of the Tonga Cable domestic submarine cable system. Likewise family and friends on the two outer islands were also acknowledged for their patience, during the past challenging 18-months.

- "лу" - запеченая в листьях таро в кокосовом креме рыба/мясо/курица или просто овощи - причем это, приготовленное именно в земляной печи, и имеет тот самый, самый лучший вкус - в духовке такое не получается и листья таро нужно готовить грамотно, иначе не то;
- "ota-ika" - сырая рыба в кокосовом креме (предварительно рыбу нарезанную кусочками вымачивают в лимонном соке ;
- многие другие очень интересные блюда;

$16.5 million grants for ocean health in Pacific at COP27 https://matangitonga.to/2022/11/09/165- … ific-cop27

Wednesday, November 9, 2022 - 19:17

Sharm El-Sheikh, Eqypt
Grants of $16.5 million for the Blue Pacific Finance Hub, which aims to build ocean and coastal resilience in countries threatened by the impacts of climate change was announced by the Asian Development Bank with the Global Environment Facility and the Nordic Development Fund at COP27, in Egypt.

The GEF-Least Developed Countries Fund is providing $10 million and ADB $2.5 million, with NDF also providing a proposed commitment of $4 million.

ADB stated on 8 November that NDF’s contribution will come through the new Ocean Resilience and Coastal Adaptation (ORCA) Trust Fund co-created by ADB and NDF which supports blue economies in Asia and the Pacific of which Blue Pacific Finance Hub is a window.

The Blue Pacific Finance Hub aims to raise $50 million in grant finance to leverage $500 million in ocean investments to build resilient blue economies in the Pacific.

ADB Vice-President for East Asia, Southeast Asia, and the Pacific Ahmed M. Saeed, said oceans are a lifeline for ADB’s Pacific developing member countries.

"We are grateful to our partners for their contributions and look forward to working with them closely to support the Pacific’s blue economies.”

Marshall Islands Climate Envoy Tina Stege in welcoming the announcement said, Marshallese identity and culture are inextricably tied to the oceans.

"Our economic activities are also closely tied to the sea and marine resources. We must find ways to adapt to the impacts of climate change that threaten our way of life, while also exploring opportunities to develop and strengthen our ocean economies. Grant-based finance and technical support will be key to our efforts.”

The Blue Pacific Finance Hub will particularly help women and communities by funding coastal adaptation, including nature-based solutions, ocean-based mitigation, such as marine renewable energy and shipping decarbonization, sustainable seafood and marine protected areas, and marine pollution control.

2)
https://matangitonga.to/2022/11/09/we-h … u-vi-cop27
“We no longer have the luxury of time,” says Tupou VI at COP27

Wednesday, November 9, 2022 - 12:20. Updated on Wednesday, November 9, 2022 - 12:28.

Sharm El-Sheikh, Eqypt

King Tupou VI and Hon. Hu'akavameiliku attending COP27, the UN Climate Change Conference. Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt. 7 November 2022.
Climate change is the single greatest threat that will determine the future of Small Island Developing States like the Kingdom of Tonga, said King Tupou VI at COP27 this week, and “we no longer have the luxury of time."

“Our task in delivering for Our People and for Our Planet is to agree to goals with the highest ambition possible and act together before the impacts become irreversible for us all,” the king said when he addressed the 27th Session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP27), on 7 November in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt.

King Tupou VI commended the outcomes from COP26 and noted that we will only be a step closer to our goals if every country delivers on their pledge.

"We are here to make progress from where we stood with the Glasgow Climate Pact and more importantly, with the commitments we made at the adoption of the Paris Agreement.

He said the theme chosen for the 27th Session of the Conference of the Parties, ‘Delivering for people and the planet’ “is both a timely and an essential reminder of the urgency of the task at hand for the survival of the Earth and for us its inhabitants. We no longer have the luxury of time”.

The King said 30 years ago, the United Nations charted a course in adopting the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change and in 2015 we gave this journey a new “raison d’etre” in the Paris Agreement. At COP26, in Glasgow, parties increased ambition and kept the hope of 1.5 degrees alive.

“The inherent physical attributes of our islands in the Pacific Ocean make climate change the single greatest threat that will determine the future of Small Island Developing States like the Kingdom of Tonga. Tonga

“My Kingdom is the third most vulnerable country in the world to the adverse effects of climate change,” said the King.

"As a people, we share a deep connection to the Ocean. As with many other Pacific Island countries, Tonga is heavily dependent on its fisheries and ocean resources for food, transport, economic development, and culture.

“Historically the Tongan people have always shown resilience in the face of natural disasters.

“However, with record rates of increased coastal erosion, ocean acidification, loss of coral reefs coupled with the ever-present rising of sea-levels, three times higher than the global average, our ability to respond to the increasing multiplicity of disasters and the increasing severity and intensity of extreme weather patterns is now undermined."

Appreciation

The King also thanked the countries that had made a contribution to the recovery efforts of Tonga after the Hunga-Tonga Hunga-Ha'apai eruption and tsunamis in January this year.

“On the 15th of January, Tonga experienced a volcanic explosion equal to none in our living history. Homes were destroyed; lives were lost, and entire communities have become deeply traumatized by the sonic explosions and resulting tsunami waves. Population displacement has now become a permanent feature for my people.

“In the aftermath of the explosion, we experienced the care, compassion and support of the global community, and our neighboring countries in the response and recovery efforts.

"I acknowledge your kindness and the compassion shown towards the people of the Kingdom of Tonga."
Tupou VI
King Tupou VI addresses COP27, the UN Climate Change Conference. Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt. 7 November 2022.
Challenges after volcanic explosion

The King highlighted two key future challenges resulting from this unprecedented volcanic explosion. These included access to clean and safe drinking water. The pollution of rain-water in the aftermath of the volcanic explosion had highlighted the vulnerability of the water storage sites in the outer islands.

“This urgent reality places greater importance on the access to available stand-alone water desalination technologies that can operate on renewable energy.”

He said the second challenge, as an Ocean State, is to offer affordable transportation that does not add to Green House Gas Emissions.

“Our culture and history as peoples of the ocean has taught us to live in harmony with our environment. In the near future, we will need to urgently re-acquaint our people with such livelihoods and adopt cutting edge technologies that promote wind- powered, low carbon emitting modes of transport,” he said.

"As Small Island Developing States, we cannot face the challenges presented to all of us alone. We are firmly committed to international goals. In 2020, the Government of Tonga submitted its second Nationally Determine Contribution (NDC) under the Paris Agreement, setting ambitious mitigation and adaptation goals.

“In addition, Tonga’s Long Term Low Emission Development Strategy (LT-LEDS) sets targets in sectors including energy, transport, waste management and the resettlement of communities."

Global objectives

“Global objectives must be directly translated into our mission and journey, charting a pathway for a resilient, sustainable and inclusive future for Tonga. Such goals and measures also support the implementation of the Tonga Climate Change Policy from 2016 and uphold the overarching goal of a climate change resilient Tonga by 2035.”

For Small Island Developing States like Tonga, adaptation to climate change generates larger benefits when delivered in conjunction with other development activities such as disaster risk reduction and community-based approaches to development.

“My Kingdom shares the concerns of the other countries of the Pacific Islands Forum. In solidarity, we endorsed the 2050 Strategy for the Blue Pacific Continent that highlights the challenges that we face as a region and symbolizes our drive to respond to our ever-changing environment.”

He said as the impacts of climate change are inter-generational and our actions and decisions today will have a major bearing on the future of our people.

"I am encouraged by the agendas at COP27 over the coming days. I hope that all of us here present will be inspired, motivated and driven into action on firm commitments, a sense of shared responsibility and connection with the global community.

“This will be a testament to genuine partnerships of all Parties, in raising ambitions and actions towards achieving the goals of the Paris Agreement.

“May we always keep in mind the impacts of our decisions and actions, here at COP27, as we chart our course towards a successful, prosperous and sustainable future. “A future where the well-being, survival and peace of future generations, are their inheritance."

One to two Tropical Cyclones predicted for coming season

At least one to two Tropical Cyclones (TC) are predicted to cross Tonga waters during the 2022-2023 cyclone season with a high chance that one will be severe, according to Tonga Meteorology Services cyclone outlook report, on 24 October.

Historical records also indicate that Tonga could expect at least one cyclone and at most three cyclones to occur with a moderate to high chance (60%) of at least one Severe Tropical Cyclone occurring.

The cyclones are expected to mostly come from the West and North-West or from the direction of Fiji and the rest from the North, East, and North-East.

Tonga Met said the 2022-2023 Tropical Cyclone Season is likely to be largely influenced by La Nina conditions, which may bring above average rainfall to all of Tonga.

For the South West Pacific Region, around five to seven named tropical cyclones are expected with up to one to four reaching Category 3 to 5.

Current dynamics indicated that the First Tropical Cyclone activity for this season in the South West Pacific region could start from around early to mid-December 2022 to January 2023.

The official 2022 / 2023 TC Season will begin on 1 November 2022 and will officially end on 30 April 2023.

Tonga Met advised the public to start preparing and fix shutters and trim trees near the house in case of a severe event.

“All communities should remain alert and prepared throughout the 2022-2023 Tropical Cyclone Season and take heed of tropical cyclone alerts, warnings and advisories seriously whenever it is issued to reduce the negative effects on life and property”.

“All communities are urged to be vigilant and follow forecast information provided by the Meteorology Services during the season. An update outlook will be issued at the end of January 2023.

Likey Sector Impacts during the 2022-2023 Tropical Cyclone Season

Agriculture
Although there is less likelihood of Cyclone occurrence than usual, it is the cyclone season so strong wind events will happen from time to time and crops prone to wind damage like Banana, Papaya and Breadfruit will be affected. At the same time, La Nina conditions will bring above average rainfall which will good for planting higher rainfall (big leaf plants) crops such as Kava, Taro, Banana and Kape. Weed management will be a must this season in order to get a good harvest.
Water
Water surplus during this season is to be expected. Therefore, rain water should be collected and harvested this season as much as possible to be used when the rainy season ends around April 2023. Clean roofs and replace guttering’s.
Health
Higher risk of water contamination related diseases occurring due to above average rainfall expected and flooding of low-lying areas. Mosquitoes will be a problem from the months of December to February due to higher rainfall and higher humidity so mosquito management will be key to prevent mosquito transmitted disease like dengue.
Infrastructure
There is a moderate to high chance of one severe cyclone happening this season, so the public are advised to fix shutters and trim trees near the house just in case we get a severe event.
Tourism
Moderate to High risk for Tourism activities due to moderate to high chance of a severe cyclone occurring.
Fisheries
Ocean nutrients will be abundant due to La Nina conditions so expect tuna fisheries to be good as well as trolleying. Expect low to moderate coral bleaching or algae blooms.
Utilities
Moderate to high risk of Communications, Water and Power utilities failures due to tropical cyclone activity. But high risk of flooding related problems.
Transport
Moderate to high risk of above than normal cancellations to ferry and aircraft
operations due to stronger winds and tropical cyclone activity. Higher risk road and drainage flooding related problems due to higher expectation of above average rainfall.

Cocaine worth $2.3m washes up on Vava’u beaches

Thursday, July 29, 2021 - 18:27. Updated on Thursday, July 29, 2021 - 19:21.

Cocaine packages with a street value of around $2.3 million pa’anga have washed up on beaches at Höleva and Ha‘alaufuli in Vava’u, Photo: Tonga Police. 29 July 2021.

Cocaine packages with a street value of around $2.3 million pa’anga have washed up on beaches at Höleva and Ha’alaufuli in Vava’u, triggering a major search for further drugs by Tonga Police and HMAF navy today.

Matangi Tonga Online understands that the first packages found by locals were handed over to police last weekend

Vava'uans are being urged to hand over to police any further packages that may wash up in the northern island group of Tonga.

Acting Deputy Commissioner Halatoa Taufa, National Crime and Investigations, Tonga Police, said today that samples had tested positive for cocaine, using tests by law enforcement in Nuku'alofa.

He said that Police, who were still investigating exactly when the first packages were found, were working closely with the Tongan navy, utilising the patrol boat VOEA Ngahau Koula to scour areas of interest in the Vava‘u waters.

“There is possibility that more packages may turn up on the beach and we ask any members of the public to immediately contact Police if they found or knew anyone to have found further drugs,” said A/D Commissioner Taufa.

Tonga Police photos show at least five bricks of cocaine, with another black rubber bag containing a quantity of white powder wrapped in plastic. Taufa said that the weight of the haul was still being measured by police. As to the size of the packages, “The packages look similar to those that were found in Vava'u previously,” he said, referring to the wreck of the drugs yacht JeReVe in 2012.

Cocaine package washed up in Vava'u. Photo: Tonga Police
Taufa strongly reminded that “anyone who has in their possession any of the washed-up drugs and failing to hand over to Police is a serious offence. Contact Police on phone 740-1660 or 922 and share any information you may have on this matter or any drug related offence,” he said.

UNODC

This is not the first time that major shipments of illicit drugs have been found in Tongan waters.

The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crimes (UNODC) report on Transnational Organised Crimes in the Pacific in September 2016 noted that Tonga, like all Pacific Island countries is geographically disadvantaged by being positioned in between known major manufacturers and markets for the illicit drugs trade. This makes Tonga vulnerable to trafficking of illicit drugs.

Thursday, July 29, 2021 - 15:59. Updated on Thursday, July 29, 2021 - 20:24.
Neiafu, Vava'u

In Vava‘u, HM King Tupou VI officially launched the Fungalelea Business Complex on the Neiafu waterfront of the Port of Refuge, on 28 July.
The $2 million pa'anga complex built by the Sanft family has a 60m frontage on Neiafu’s main street, with a three storey complex that goes down to the waterfront.
Otto Gustav Sanft, gave an overview of the project and said that 80% of the rental space of the building had been rented out, “although not all tenants are able to open for business today.”
The building was constructed on the site of the old trading store established by the Sanfts. The Sanft descendants celebrated their 145th year of business in Vava‘u that was established in 1875.

The Fungalelea Business Complex on the Neiafu waterfront. Vava'u. 28 July 2021.
The Sanfts were plantation owners and general exporters. In the past, businesses in the area had also included wholesalers and retailers, a footwear shop, manufacturing, garment sewing, and an export juice factory. In 1975 the business was incorporated as O. G. Sanft & Sons Limited. It had branches in Nuku'alofa and Vava‘u.
In 2017 the board of directors of O. G. Sanft Vava‘u Ltd. decided to build a business complex to support the economic development in Vava‘u. Lisiate ‘Esau Tupou of Quality Design Ltd. and Carl Sanft jointly created a design for the building that is multi-functional. In the future it can be modified into a hotel.
When Otto, a student, the youngest son of Carl and ‘Anaseini Sanft, returned to Tonga from New Zealand for his semester break last December, he stayed to help with the construction progress over the last seven months.
Otto said he was, “honoured and thankful for this opportunity...to present the project overview of the Fungalelea Business Complex. “I have gained valuable experience and learning that will assist and help me a lot to complete my academic study.”
The Sanft family started their business in Vava'u in 1875. Previous heads of the business were, successively, the late Messrs. Christian, August, Albert, Frank, Otto, Charles, Herbert and Ralph Sanft.

Thursday, April 29, 2021 - 18:14

Geneva, Switzerland

Globally, new COVID-19 cases increased again with nearly 5.7 million new cases reported last week, surpassing previous peaks, according to the World Health Organisation (WHO) weekly COVID-19 update on April 25.

The number of new deaths increased for the sixth consecutive week, with over 87,000 new deaths reported.

For the third consecutive week, the South-East Asia region reported the highest relative increases in both case and death incidences.

While, a number of countries in the region are reporting upward trends, India accounts for the vast majority of cases from this regional trend and 38%of global cases reported in the past week.

However, apart from the South-East Asia and Western Pacific regions this week, all other regions are reporting decreases in case incidence .

Similarly, all but two regions, South-East Asia and Eastern Mediterranean, reported declines in new deaths this week.

Health
Tonga's extra doses, means more can get vaccinated

Thursday, April 29, 2021 - 18:49. Updated on Friday, April 30, 2021 - 09:50.

Nuku'alofa, Tonga

Happiness is an efficient vaccination roll-out. Acting CEO for Health Dr Reynold ‘Ofanoa, Public Health Sister Afu Tei and Minister of Health Hon ‘Amelia Tu‘ipulotu. Nuku'alofa, 29 April 2021.
By Eleanor Gee

Tonga’s precious supply of covid vaccine can now be extended to thousands more people thanks to the skills of the Tongan nurses who have not wasted a drop of the first batch received this month.

The Ministry of Health announced today that people aged 35 years and over can now be vaccinated with the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine, after a mid-term review of the vaccination rollout confirmed that 4,800 extra doses could be extracted from the first batch of vials received by Tonga.

The Supervising Public Health Sister Afu Tei, said today they had found that by strictly using precise measurements of each innoculation, they could extract more doses from the vials.

She said the amount of vaccine dosage used in Tonga for each person, is 0.5ml or half a millilitre, which is in line with what other countries are using.

The vaccine information stipulates each vial provides 10 doses, but can reach 12 doses.

When the vaccine was rolled out on 15 April, Sister Afu vaccinated Princess Pilolevu, Lord Tuita and the Prime Minister Hon Pohiva Tu’i’onetoa and others.

“As I was the first person to vaccinate people, I confirmed how many doses are in one vial. The first vial I used reached 12 doses,” she said.

“Right now, nurses can reach about 12 doses for each vial. And that is why we have lowered the age limit because we have the extra doses."

She also confirmed that around 40% of the vaccines had been used to date.

“When each vial is opened, it expires after six-hours. Since the beginning of the program, we have not wasted one dose. The nurses also keeps in contact with other teams in various locations to ensure all the doses are used up within the six-hours.”

The COVAX facility supplied enough for about 20% of Tonga's population to receive first doses. With second doses to follow in June. The 4,800 doses saved are additional to this.

Keep Tonga safe

The Minister for Health Hon ‘Amelia Tu‘ipulotu urged anyone in Tonga who is eligible, to get their vaccination as soon as possible and keep our island safe.

“This is especially important now with the recent outbreak of virus variant in our neighbour Fiji,” she said.

The Minister was pleased to have seen first hand the professionalism, international standard and high competence of nurses administering the vaccines in the community.

The World Health Organization had estimated up to 15% percentage of the vaccines would be wasted.

She acknowledged Sister Afu and Sister Tilema for their work in training nurses to administer vaccines accurately and precisely.

“This is good news because there is a limited amount of COVID-19 vaccines in the world. This is a precious resource to keep our country safe.”

Strengthening quarantine

Acting CEO for Health Dr Reynold ‘Ofanoa said learning from Fiji's outbreak, they will be looking at how to further strengthen our quarantine process.

The Ministry of Health now encourages, people who are aged 35 years and above, and also those aged 18 years and above with a non-communicable disease or with disabilities can be vaccinated.

If the vaccination program has moved from people's communities, they can go to vaccination sites or visit the NCD centre at Vaiola Hospital from 8:00am to 4:00pm.

Sister Afu said a mobile vaccination team is also available to vaccinate those who are not able to get to the locations. She said they can call 0800019 to arrange a time for the team to see them.

To date, 8,220 have been vaccinated and less than 1% experienced mild symptoms with no one admitted to hospital in Tonga.

The new British High Commissioner Designate to Tonga, HE Lucy Joyce, congratulated Tonga on its covid-free status this week. The vaccine had arrived before the virus and “not many countries are in such a privileged position,” she said on Tuesday.

The Oxford AstraZeneca vaccine arrived in Tonga on April 15, acquired through the COVAX facility. Ms Joyce said the UK, among the first and largest donors, had committed £578 million to COVAX vaccine equity. She recognised the leadership of HRH Princess Pilovelu and Lord Tuita and the Prime Minister Hon. Rev. Dr Pohiva Tu'ionetoa in volunteering to be the first vaccinated in Tonga in public.

“It is has been a great collective effort to keep Tonga covid-free and I congratulate you, Prime Minister, the government and the people of Tonga. As it happens, this is World Immunisation Week, and I commend the Ministry of Health their enviable 98% coverage of standard vaccination programmes. I hope we will see high vaccination levels for Covid-19.”

Queen’s 95th birthday

The new High Commissioner Designate hosted a function at her residence on April 27 to celebrate the 95th birthday of Queen Elizabeth II. A moment of silence in memory of HRH the Duke of Edinburgh was observed.

In her address, Ms Joyce acknowledged the long relationship between the UK and the Kingdom of Tonga, and said she looked forward to presenting her Letters of Credence to King Tupou VI on 12 May, and the High Commission in Nuku'alofa being officially open.

Even though the British High Commission in Tonga had been closed for the last 15 years, the UK had been continuing to fund regional organisations including SPREP and the SPC.

“The UK funds around 10% of the World Bank spend in Tonga; is the 4th largest contributor to the Asia Development Bank; contributes around 18% of the Green Climate Fund, and is among the top five donors for the UN agencies including UNDP, WHO and UNICEF.”

“We are also...refocusing UK effort in an Indo-Pacific Tilt, which I expect in time to lead to more focus on Tonga, including through defence training,” she said.

Electoral roll system

The first bilateral project since reopening in Tonga was funding a new electoral roll system for the Electoral Commission of Tonga to support the election process this year.

“In June this year the UK will host the G7 of large economic nations to focus on Oceans, followed by the COP26 in November, to tackle the increasing effects of climate change.

“Tonga has already made a number of key commitments including submitting last December an enhanced Nationally Determined Contribution, and by its great work designating 30% of its Exclusive Economic Zone as Special Marine Areas.”

Toloa Forest

Ms Joyce also mentioned the creation of the Queen’s Commonwealth Canopy, a network of areas of indigenous forest to be preserved in perpetuity to mark a lifetime of service to the Commonwealth by HM Queen Elizabeth II. Tonga nominated the Toloa Forest Reserve, which the Duke and Duchess of Sussex visited in 2018, and the ‘Eua National Park Reserve.

The Prime Minister, Hon. Rev. Dr Pohiva Tu'i'onetoa responded, and said that he remembered that the Tupou College Boys Choir had performed traditional Tongan music to commemorate the event at the Toloa Forest Reserve.

“The memorable Mosquito Song got quite a mention too in reknowned media such as the BBC and Time Magazine. As an ex-student of Toloa, I still smile when I recall this royal visit,” he said.
