New fast catamaran ferry for outer islands

Monday, January 8, 2018 - 19:15.  Updated on Monday, January 8, 2018 - 19:16.

Nuku'alofa, Tonga

MV Tongaiaki
MV Tongiaki, a fast aluminium catamaran, built in Indonesia, is expected to arrive in Nuku’alofa on January 9 to operate as a vessel transporting passengers and cargo to the outer islands.

Friendly Island Shipping Agency (FISA) announced today its newest vessel named by King Tupou VI will be commissioned on Friday, January 12 at Queen Salote Wharf.

The catamarn will operate as a ferry, initially to the outer islands with its maiden voyage on January 13 to Vava’u and Ha’apai, returning to Nuku’alofa on the same day.

FISA intends to operate it later in regional trade to Fiji, Samoa and other Pacific Islands.

The fully air conditioned catamaran is 33m long, with a 8.5m beam and draft of 1.9m laden and can accomodate 200 passengers and eight crew.

It is powered by 2 MAN engines with a combined power of 2,048 Kw, driving the propulsion units of two fixed pitch propellers, at a service speed of 28 knots (max. speed is 31 knots).

The year-old catamaran is  classed with the Bureau Veritas (BV) Classification Society, insured by Lloyds underwriters through Willis of New Zealand, designed by Incat Crowther in Australia and built by PT Cahaya Samudra of Batam, Indonesia.

It was bought from Majestic Fast Ferries Ltd of Singapore, where it operated between Singapore and Batam.

FISA currently operates theinter-island ferry, MV 'Otuanga'ofa which was a gift from Japan.

The MV Tongiaki, takes its name from the ancient Tongan long distance sea-voyaging canoes.

King launches high speed MV Tongiaki ferry

Friday, January 12, 2018 - 20:47.  Updated on Saturday, January 13, 2018 - 20:50.

King Tupou VI today, 12 January launched the MV Tongiaki,  at Queen Salote Wharf.

The $8.3 million pa’anga aluminium catamaran will offer high speed service throughout Tonga’s groups of islands and also to Samoa and Fiji.

The catamaran (kalia) 32.7m long, is fully air-conditioned, carrying up to 200 passengers in comfortable seating.

Stephen Edwards, the Chairman of the Friendly Island Shipping Agency (FISA), at the launch today, said he was convinced that the MV Tongiaki will improve the shipping services within Tonga and our neighbouring island countries.

He said that in the past FISA had charted a catamaran from Australia at $10,000 a day when their passenger ferry, the MV ‘Otuanga’ofa lost one of its rudders. Even with such a high charter cost, FISA managed to make a profit from the exercise. Stephen was optimistic that the FISA's $8.3m investment will be a success.

Mosese Fakatou, FISA CEO, said that the MV Tongiaki is capable of travelling at 31 knots, but because they would like to cut down on its fuel consumption they will cut down in speed and travel only at 21 to 22 knots.

The MV Tongiaki will make its maiden voyage in Tonga to Ha’apai and Vava’u tomorrow, Saturday morning, leaving at 8:00am, and is scheduled to be back at Nuku’alofa at 7.30pm the same day.
