Govt. announces open border policy and new rules for travel to Tonga
Saturday, July 23, 2022 - 05:49
Tonga's borders will open on 1 August, with the number of weekly flights increasing slowly over the next two months, the Tonga Government announced last night.
The Prime Minister Hon. Hu'akavameiliku and Cabinet met yesterday afternoon and approved recommendations from the National Emergency Management Committee (NEMC) on the open border policy framework.
The rules for incoming passengers require adults to prove they are vaccinated for COVID-19 (unless exempted) with at least two doses, and all passengers must have a supervised negative rapid antigen test (RAT) before departure.
“Failure to provide a legitimate vaccination certificate and required Negative COVID-19 test will result in No Boarding or Denied Entry,” the Prime Minister's Office stated last night.
During August the number of incoming flights to Tonga will be limited to two per week from New Zealand, two per week from Fiji and one from Australia.
Starting from 29 August this will increase to three flights from New Zealand per week.
Then from 31 October, there will be six flights per week from New Zealand.
“Further review of the number of flights and cruiseliners (watercrafts) for September and October 2022 will be at the discretion of the National Emergency Management Committee (NEMC).”
The rules require passengers to submit two documents to travel@health.gov.to before departure:
their vaccination certificate at least 48 hours prior to departure and
their negative supervised RAT test within 24 hours of departure.
The vaccination certificate and negative test results are also required for check in before departure.
After arrival, all passengers must have a supervised PCR test within day 3-5 after arrival, at an approved health centre in their area of residence.
On arrival in Tonga the new rules require that all passengers arriving at Fua'amotu Airport and the people who are meeting them, “must wear a face mask at all times”.
The Ministry of Heath encouraged all travellers to have their booster dose completed before travelling to Tonga and urged them to comply with the rules.
“Your compliance with the conditions listed is important to ensuring the safety of all travelers and our people. We look forward to your support and trust you will help so that we can continue to keep Tonga safe.”
Passengers will also be encouraged to download the Tonga 'Atautolu contact tracing app.
Passengers who return positive tests after arrival will need to self-isolate at home for five days from the date of being tested positive.
