Tongatapu cooler-than-average overnight
Friday, June 12, 2026 - 20:24.  Updated on Friday, June 12, 2026 - 20:33.
The Tonga Meteorological Service recorded cooler-than-average overnight temperatures across the island this morning, 12 June, although they remained above the coldest June temperature ever recorded in Tongatapu.
Residents across Tongatapu woke to unusually cold conditions with overnight temperatures falling well below the seasonal average as Tonga enters the early stages of its cool and dry season.
Data collected from automated weather stations across the island showed the lowest minimum temperature was recorded at ʻAtele, where temperatures dropped to 13.8 degrees Celsius at about 5.50am local time.
The reading was significantly lower than Tongatapu's climatological average minimum temperature for June of 19.4C, making it 5.6C below normal for this time of year.
Historical records show the lowest minimum temperature recorded in Tonga during June was 10.2C at Fua'amotu on June 3, 1985, a record that still stands more than four decades later.
Meteorologists said the cooler temperatures were not unexpected, with Tonga only beginning its annual cool and dry season.
The season, which typically runs from May to October, is characterized by lower humidity, reduced rainfall and cooler overnight temperatures, particularly across Tongatapu and the southern island groups.
Weather officials advised residents to expect further drops in temperature in the coming weeks and months as winter conditions become more established across the kingdom.
While overnight temperatures fluctuate depending on local weather patterns, forecasters said cooler air masses moving across the region were likely to bring additional chilly mornings during the remainder of the season.
A high-pressure system located far to the southwest will continue to direct cool fresh to strong south to southeasterly winds across the group throughout the rest of this week. Tomorrow, Saturday, temperatures are forecast to range   between 16C to 25C

Tonga records coldest June temperature since 1985

Но это Тонгатапу, а на Вавау минимум 20, в среднем 22-24.

Tonga recorded its coldest June temperature on Friday, 26 June 2026, breaking a 41-year-old record.
A low temperature of 9.5°C was recorded at ‘Atele at approximately 7:10 am on Friday, surpassing the previous record of 10.2°C set on 3 June 1985, in Fua'amotu.
Interestingly, this meant that Atele was experiencing about the same temperature as Auckland, New Zealand, at the same time on Friday morning (Auckland was around 10°C).
The Tonga Meteorological Services (TMS) noted that these cold conditions are expected to persist for the next few days as Tonga move through the cool and dry season.
"Citizens across Tonga, especially those in Tongatapu and ‘Eua, are advised to stay warm, as these cold conditions are expected to persist for the next couple of days."
Meanwhile, heavy sea fog has been observed across the coastal areas of Nuku'alofa and much of Tongatapu.
"These foggy conditions are closely associated with the cold temperatures currently affecting the southern islands of Tonga."
The public has been advised to exercise caution when travelling, especially during the early morning hours. Motorists should drive with their headlights on and in reduced speed, maintaining a safe following distance is also advised. Mariners are also urged to navigate with extra care due to significantly reduced visibility at sea.
